what to expect:

We are on a fairly remote stretch of the Oaxacan Coast of Mexico. It’s wild, powerful, and beautiful, which is why we love it here.  Visiting the Oaxacan coast provides a unique opportunity to be immersed in nature. el triángulo seeks to create an elegant experience while still being in touch and in balance with the ecosystem. If you are drawn to the long sunsets and bright blue skies, we also want to prepare you for the parts of living in a small, rustic Mexican town that may be less familiar.

Property:

The nearest airport is an hour away (details below), while the nearest Starbucks is three hours away.  That gives you a sense of where we are. But don’t worry, there is way better coffee here!

  • We are a seven minute walk from the main road in town.  The second half of the walk is up a fairly steep hill. It is a great workout.

  • The beach is another seven minute walk from the main road.

  • We are on the edge of the town, and walking back at night requires a flashlight.

Ecology:

El Triángulo is designed to be as low impact on the environment as possible.

  • The rooms have fans but no air conditioning (except studio).

  • Water is precious here, for that reason we are using dry composting toilets. One composting toilet can save approximately 6600 gallons of water a year.

  • hot water comes from solar powered heaters.

Nature, services, and resources:

  • The sun here is very strong.  Hats and/or sunblock are highly recommended if in the sun between 9am-4pm for more than twenty minutes

  • All spaces use fans to circulate air. The only space with air-conditioning is the recording studio, to protect the equipment.

  • There are many insects around, including scorpions and spiders, mosquitos (can carry dengue fever), ants , etc..  We take steps to reduce and relocate each of these. Please use repellent, especially in the early morning and dinner hours.

  • Mobile phone service and power is generally pretty solid, but there are outages from time to time.  We are equipped with a generator and Starlink Internet (satellite) when all else fails.

  • It’s not uncommon for the local ATMs to run out of money.  It’s best to change or pull out money in the Mexico City airport. This will offer you the best exchange rate. If there is no money at the ATMs in Mazunte, the next nearest banks are in the town of Pochutla (thirty min drive) Puerto Escondido, or Huatulco (one hour drive)

  • Credit cards are not readily accepted here. It is highly recommended to exchange money at the airport in Mexico City.

  • No one uses Venmo, Paypal, or Applepay here.

Where is Mazunte and what are the closest airports?

We are equidistant from airports in Puerto Escondido (pxm) and Huatulco (hux).  The journey from either airport to our place is about an hour. it costs about 900-2000 mxn, depending on number of people, your willingness to walk outside the airport, and negotiation skills.

Both Puerto Escondido and Huatulco have frequent flights to and from Mexico City.  Puerto Escondido has some very cheap, direct flights from Tijuana on Volaris, which can be a good option if you’re in Southern California.  You can park or be dropped off on the US side and walk across the Cross Boarder Xpress to the airport.  It’s very easy to do.

Otherwise, you’ll get yourself to Mexico City, then book a short flight down to the coast.  guadalajara, dallas, and chicago also have flights to huatulco. puerto escondido does not have any international flights. Most options will show up on Kayak, Expedia, etc..  Common airlines to the coast are Volaris, Viva Aerobus, and Aero Mexico.

Driving from Mexico City takes about 9 hours; 6 hours to Oaxaca City, then another 3 hours to the coast via a new super highway.

There is also the option to take the scenic route from oaxaca, over a very windy, but beautiful mountain road. If you have the time, I highly recommend a stay up there someday. Terraza de la tierra is amazing.

Where is El Triángulo?

~ El Triángulo is nestled behind the town of Mazunte up a healthy hill. We are a fifteen minute walk from the beach up a hill. Guests must feel comfortable walking up a hill or they may rent a four wheeler or scooter to go up and down the hill.

what about taxis to el triángulo?

You are responsible for your airfare and taxi fee to and from the airport, unless otherwise agreed to in advance.

A taxi from within the airport in PUerto escondido or Huatulco to el triángulo will cost around 1400 Mxn. a short walk outside the airport to the main road will reduce the cost to about 1000 mxn. 4 people can squeeze in, but with luggage it will be less.

A van from within the airport that can carry 6-8 will cost around 2000 MXN.,

what to bring:

***it’s highly recommended to exchange or pull out cash before leaving the airport in Mexico City, or before leaving your own country. The ATMs in mazunte often run out of money.

There is an ATM at the Huatulco airport but it is in the departures area. You can go there through the outside of the airport and it is a short walk, less than four minutes.

there is an atm at the airport in puerto escondido as well.

San Agustinillo and Mazunte are neighboring villages with very friendly communities, however you are in a foreign country. Please keep valuables to a minimum and always lock them up in your rooms.

We provide purified water for you to fill your water bottle with. When you are out, note that all ice is made of purified water and when at restaurants drink bottled water only.

The Pacific Ocean is fantastic, as well as wild. Be careful when venturing into the ocean and it is best practice to swim with a friend. Some of the surrounding areas have very strong currents, if you are warned of this, please listen! Safety first.

Do not swim at Playa Mermejita. It is too dangerous.
